About

Find your 12 Square Feet...Because everyone deserves space to explore their inner truth, free of the oppressions and constructs of community and society, so that they may stand in their unique authenticity.

At 12 Square Feet, we believe the foundation for establishing a safe internal space starts with establishing external boundaries, which we embody and sens within the 12 square feet of a yoga mat.  As evidenced by the work of Abraham Maslow and his contemporaries, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and Dr. Stephen Borges, by cultivating a rooted foundation of external safety and security, we can then begin the inward inquiry to witness, accept and honor feelings, emotions and thoughts, a pathway to self-actualization.

When one understands their empowerment to self-regulate, take up space, experience calm and ease, they open themselves to a greater window of tolerance to engage with the external world.  Our practices and teachings are founded on science-backed psychological principles that reveal the healing benefits of somatic experience, the whole wellness approach through the lens of yoga tradition, and the coaching-focused tenet that the individual is the best expert of their life.

In a 12 Square Feet class or workshop, participants are guided to establish energetic, emotional, mental and physical boundaries.  From here, they are guided to shift perspective to separate themselves from their thoughts and emotions and to become an observer, provided with somatic regulation tools to safely explore states of being as they arise.  Throughout the class or workshop, we offer mindful movement, breath awareness, opportunities to still the mind and open the heart, serving to unite mind, body, emotions and energy.  Free of the pieces that hold one in a fixed belief of themself, their authentic Self emerges and integrates, giving space to feel more whole, alive, confident, peaceful, content and genuine.

In congruence with yoga philosophy, the practice best serves when it continues ‘beyond the mat,’ and participants each receive a yoga mat to take home, a foundational tool to return to a felt sense of safety, both externally and internally.  Armed with practical, simple practices that can be repeated outside of class or workshop, the concepts of taking up space, feeling balanced and in control of one’s thoughts, emotions, energy and body, and emergence of true Self give rise to increasing a sense of inner sanctuary.  May everyone stand tall within and beyond their 12 Square Feet.
